Overhang Information

Additional overhangs on your new Horse Barn may be just what you need to give it the final touch of functionality and flair. Overhangs can be added onto to ANY Horse Barn or Run-In shed and the benefits are just too many not to consider closely.

With additional overhangs on a Barn the whole roof system is designed differently, giving you the head room you and your horses need to operate safely and comfortably.

Why Add an Overhang?

Comfort:
Give your equine partner the wind, rain and sun protection he deserves.

Reduce Boredom:
Even in nasty weather your horse will have the protection he needs to look out his stall door and keep tabs on the community.

Safety:
Keep that snow, rain and ice away from the stall door.

Convenience:
The overhangs make a perfect place to clip, brush or saddle your horse. The overhang posts make a perfect place for a crosstie, your farrier will love you for this extra convenient working space!

Storage:
This added protected space can be used for hay storage, muck tools, water buckets or troughs, you name it!

Ease of doing:
Your horse may use the overhang for a quick shelter from the elements without having to go into the barn itself, or you can keep horses separate having some in the stalls and others using the overhang for shelter.

Save time and money:
Gives your horse more time out of his stall, saving you money on bedding and time on mucking out.

More wall height:
The redesigned roof gives you a higher front wall, giving your horse even more headroom on the inside of the barn.

4' Overhang:

This size overhang is free standing, attached to only the barn itself. You do not have any posts to work around, it is incorporated into the roof only. To build this size overhang 2x6 rafters are used and they extend out over the front 4'. A 10' wide horse barn can be delivered fully assembled with the 4' overhang attached. You still have a 7 ½'high back wall in the barn but the front wall is now over 9' high! There is still plenty of height clearance at the front of the overhang and it is plenty strong enough to withstand the snow in the north.

6' 8' 10' and 12' Overhangs:

All overhangs in any of these sizes require the same site preparation and are built in the same manner as the other. For example a 6' overhang requires the same site work and is built similar to a 10' overhang.

For these size overhangs the barn itself is delivered fully assembled, with a custom roof system ready to add the overhang on site.

18" Concrete pilons must be poured to set the barn itself and the overhang posts on. An 18" concrete pilon 3' to 4' deep should be poured at every corner of the barn and every 10' to 12' feet on each side, there would also need to be a pilon on the two front corners of the overhang and again every 10' to 12' along the front. This allows us to set the barn and front overhang posts on these concrete pilons, eliminating any shifting.

Once the barn is set a crew will come out and finish the overhang on site, joining the back (high) side of the overhang directly to the 2x6 rafters of the barn itself and setting 6x6 posts on the poured concrete pilons along the front (low) side of the overhang. When we leave 6-8 hours later your Horse Barn or Run-In will be complete with an overhang, ready to impress and satisfy yourself and your horse.
